Flocking for the first time

June 3rd, 2008

Moments ago I installed the FLOCK browser.  According to Ed Dale, it’s better than FireFox.  We’ll see. It has some interesting features, including the blog editor that I’m using right now.

Well it works on MY computer.

worstsupport.jpgThis is a story of the worst technical support I’ve ever experienced in my life. It’s no wonder everyone complains about the quality of technical support.

As a computer tech with 20+ years of experience, I thought I’d seen and heard it all when it comes to tech support horror stories. I’ve dealt with countless completely clueless “techs” on the phone and mostly managed to keep my cool. I’ve learned to deal with those who follow their scripts without understanding. Usually once all the scripted stuff doesn’t work, you can escalate to 2nd level support and start the real troubleshooting. Read the rest of this entry »

Scan from within Microsoft Word 2007

April 3rd, 2008

A client recently upgraded to Office 2007 and asked me how to scan an image into a Word document the way she used to in Word 2003. We searched briefly but couldn’t find it. I did some searching online and found a solution on LockerGnome. Here is the an edited version of the post. It worked beautifully for me. Read the rest of this entry »

SATA disk to USB docking station

March 29th, 2008

This is the coolest thing ever!  I needed to recover some data from a customer’s crashed SATA drive and was struggling with it. I happened across the BlacX by ThermalTake. I plugged it in and nothing happened, then I slid a 2 1/2″ SATA drive into it and lo and behold, I was able to access the drive.  It support hot-swaps and didn’t require any drivers on my Vista Business computer.  This has potential to be a great backup solution - you can easily take a copy of your important data off-site.

I put in the customer’s 3 1/2″ drive and it recognized that, too - even though it was having problems. I ran GetDataBack on it and was able to recover most of her data.   (Dell and her local computer shop both told her that the data was just gone and nothing could be done… HA!)  At just under $50 this belongs in every computer technician’s toolbox.

My web host is having a sale…

February 14th, 2008

I switched to 1and1.com for web hosting a few years ago and have been nothing but happy with the service. My old hosting company kept ending up on blacklists and had a lot of down time. 1and1 has been very good to me - never a bounced email because my IP address is on a blacklist and I’m only aware of 1 outage ever since I started with them and that only lasted a few minutes.

Merchant Circle

January 25th, 2008

Late this afternoon I received a recorded phone call. Short and to the point - (paraphrased) “Someone wrote a review of your business, please go to www.merchantcircle.com and enter your business phone number into the box to see your listing.”

MerchantCircle.com

So what? I’ve been listed in Who’s Who before when they wanted to sell me a book, too. I was curious enough to go check it out anyway. Read the rest of this entry »

Marketing plan 2008

January 18th, 2008

Yesterday was the last of a 3 part teleseminar with Robin Robins on developing a marketing plan for 2008. I’m so glad I finally bit the bullet and ordered her stuff. Not only is she good at marketing but she motivates me to get things done.

Of course I haven’t finished my own plan yet, but I have the tools to do it. I’ve reserved Sunday afternoon to work on this.

If you’re a computer consultant and need more business, I highly recommend you order the Technology Marketing Toolkit - it will change your business. It’s not cheap and it’s no “magic bullet” that will fix everything that’s wrong with your business, but if you need more clients this toolkit will more than pay for itself - in fact she guarantees it.

Domain kidnapped and held for ransom

December 24th, 2007

I stumbled upon this blog entry about a poor fellow whose domain name was stolen by someone breaking into his gmail account and requesting a domain transfer.  The thief wants to be paid to return the domain to the rightful owner.   Very well written with lots of details about the theft.  This is happening right now - Christmas Eve 2007.
